German Battleship Stats: Part 2

And now we arrive to the second half of the upcoming German battleship branch! I don’t think this is intentional on Lesta’s part, but it’s an incredibly aesthetically pleasing coincidence that of the eight ships in the branch, exactly half each belong to the Kaiserliche Marine and the Kriegsmarine.

In this part, we’ll be looking at the current stats of the Kriegsmarine battleships: Gneisenau, Bismarck, Friedrich der Große, and Große Kurfürst. As I mentioned last time, though, remember that these stats are preliminary, and the ships still have a lot of testing left before they’re released; these stats will most likely change by the time release comes along.

  1. Why does Gneisenau:

    a) not have the option for historical main armarment?
    b) not have its historical 12x 150mm
    secondaries?

    Really strange…

Thx for summing all up btw 😉

    1. Thanks for reading! The devs gave their reasons for Gneisenau not having her historical armament in a Q&A I recently posted; their reasons are kinda weird, saying that it wouldn’t be balanced, and that it would be a strange gun size progression from Bayern at T6. The one good point they made is that with Gneisenau having only 15 inch guns, Scharnhorst is more unique.

What’s weirdest to me are those 12.8cm DP guns. They’re a navalized flak cannon, basically, but why they’re on Gneisenau I have no idea. I’m planning on posting the historical plan for Gneisenau’s upgrades later today, and they’re much different from what WG made.

      1. Great thank you!

The 12,8cm Flakzwilling was actually a gun Germany introduced late in WW2 and would hence really make sense on the T9/10 ships, but on Gneisenau?!Especially, since Bismarck “only” gets its historical layout with 10,5 cm guns.

I agree, “saving” the 28cm guns for Scharnhorst will make it more unique.

        Again thx for your work!!

      1. Not necessarily, it will have speed, (hopefully) accuracy, Torpedos and a good (long range) Secondary Armarment.

All in all i expect this to be the best brawling anti Dd/CA Battleship (and i believe Scharnhorst will be even better at this role)

P.S. sorry for spamming comments, but i am so happy to finally have found a good blog on WoWs😉

      2. Glad you like the blog! I’m reserving my thoughts on if she’s balanced until we actually get to see her in-game; no real point in making big complaints now. It’s an interesting situation, though, definitely; easily one of the more interesting ships we can look forward to.

  2. I’ve seen the stats already, to be honest, I’m really looking forward to the german battleship line. getting to play the legendary bismarck is something I’ve been waiting for. I think they will do fairly well, although I do think there will be some weaknesses off the bat once testing begins(with these stats presumably).

with the Gneisenau, I think its armament might be an issue in some circumstances. The low number of barrels will cause players to broadside more often to get the maximum firepower to bear, increasing the odds that the Gneisenau might get citadeled. also if attacked from the back, you will be exceedingly vulnerable with only the one twin 38, meaning if you’ll be relying on your secondaries heavily should a destroyer or cruiser sneak up behind you. I also agree on the historical accuracy of the 12.8cm dual flak cannons being available, would have made more sense on the Bismarck(it would likely have been installed later if it hadn’t been sunk early on) and H-39 at tier 9.

Bismarck and H-39 should be fine, but again I wish they had the 12.8cm flak cannons instead of the 105. Reason being that, if you’ve played the german cruisers you will know this already, but how irrelevant the 105’s are at tier 8 and up. they do decent AA damage, but as secondaries they are basically just for show. I don’t see much of a point to the 406 on the H39 and H41 though, there’s really no reason to have choose it over the 420 based on the stats presented(dispersion might be better though, but we don’t know that as of yet).

    1. Maybe Gneisenau will end up being like the Furutaka: kind of a lame, weird ship in the line, only to get great, handy buffs later on that make her fun and playable.

I’m guessing there will be some real reason (other than RoF) to choose between the 406s and 420s, otherwise they wouldn’t include them as options on the tier 10 ship.

      1. well, their not out yet and testing has yet to start(well, beyond super testers feedback anyway). hopefully it’ll be adjusted after some public test feedback. Although I’ve seen the Scharnhorst a few times and I must say, so far it seems really powerful even though it has lower than normal caliber guns for its tier. The whole caliber mismatch explanation is BS to me, Gneisenau would probably benefit from having two options.I don’t think it would hurt Scharnhorst sales as much as they might think.

I think if they increased the traverse speed of the turrets and took another 2-3 seconds off the reload, I think it would be a viable option. Have a choice of either being more flexible in battle(something current BB’s lack) with the 40.6 or get better damage output/alpha with the 42
